The ‘virtualized’ part is a pretty big deal. It means that from Slicehost’s handy web interface, I can do a lot of mundane(but still useful) things – things like backing up my slice(their word for ’server’), rebooting it, dynamically scaling it up or down, and even giving it a handy name to remember it.

Slicehost isn't really what you're looking for - as virtually all your requirements other than #3 are shared hosting issues. :)

Because having a slice is like having a dedicated server, Apache/MySQL/PSP(?) are up to you to install - along with Fantastico and cPanel.

You're not going to find a Slice for under $20/month, either - although I can testify that the $20/month slice is more than enough for getting started.

My tastes are pretty mundane when it comes to web hosting:

1. Must be Linux/Apache/MySql/PSP based
2. Must have Fantastico and cPanel
3. Must have good uptime and low latency
4. Must cost less than $10 per month

I'm going to check out slicehost and see how they compare. Thanks for the post.

I don't know about that Luke. I've heard from a fellow webmaster that he experienced a few times downtime for about 1 hour. That is frustrating you know?

Do you know which datacenter he was in? My slice is in STL-B and hasn't had
any downtime as a result of anything Slicehost did.

I've now been with Slicehost since august, and have two 256 slices - they've
been great, and I don't think that I've actually had to deal with any
downtime at all that was their fault.

Rich: that's a fair opinion, but it tends to leave a bad taste in my mouth to just hand out a referral link - so I like to disclose what is(and isn't) a referral link in addition to giving a non-referral link for users who don't want to use a referral link.

Plan doesn't look bad.

And just my own opinion: but if someone is needing hosting and wouldn't use your referral link if they go with slicehost, they need to be ashamed.

You are giving us a free education on how to build a browser based game here, one that I find invaluable. So using your referral link should be a no brainer.
